The new magic items of the Orcs and Goblins army intrigue me; somehow I've convinced myself that they're not absolutely overpriced and terrible, and I'm set to prove it. In particular, I've been thinking about the Armor of Gork. For all points available to a Lord, it gives your Warboss D6 Impact Hits (including the choppa bonus) and +D3 Toughness. How would I use it? Well, here's my idea:
Savage Orc Warboss
Warboar, Spear, Shield
Armor of Gork
Leading a unit of 5 Savage Orc Boar Boyz carrying spears and the Banner of Eternal Flame, to give the Warboss a Look Out Sir! roll against templates and flaming attacks on his weapon.
The Warboss alone, on the charge, will dish out D6 S6 impact hits, followed by 5 S7 attacks at initiative 4, all of them flaming attacks, before the Boar Boyz get to strike with their 15 S5 attacks. The Warboss alone should be enough to take out a Hellpit Abomination or a Hydra, and together all of them will be enough to help break just about anything if they hit the flank while the enemy is fighting an infantry mob to the front.
For protection, the Warboss is sitting at a 2+ armor save, 6+ ward save and the potential for Toughness 8, should be more than enough to survive most enemies for a turn. That's about as tough as you can get your Savage Orc to be, for less than 300 points, while the Boar Boyz come in at slightly over a 100 points.
If you find yourself fielding a Warboss for his leadership without him actually doing much aside from keeping an eye on things, why not kit him up to a powerhouse of destruction? The Armor of Gork is one way of doing it.
